Indigenous Peoples Rights and the UNGP Implementation: Business as usual? Experiences of Indigenous Peoples

Background

The adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in 2011 was a milestone achievement by the international community. The first decade of implementation has seen significant progress in terms of policy-level commitments to protect and respect human rights the context of business activities.

These developments have helped raise awareness and attention to the concerns of Indigenous Peoples in relation to business. Nonetheless, Indigenous Peoples continue facing gross human rights violations related to business activities in their traditional lands and territories. Moreover, new and emerging threats such as criminalization have put at risk defenders and their communities when opposing business projects in their lands and territories.

In the context of the supporting a stronger second decade of UNGP implementation, Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) and its partners are undertaking a series of case studies and advocacy strategies to in advancing the protection of their rights including access to justice.  In addition, these actions will be part of the Indigenous Peoples’ Roadmap for the respect and protection of their individual and collective rights in the second decade of UNGP implementation.

The session will provide ongoing cases of business operations affecting indigenous peoples in India, Philippines, Mexico and Colombia.   These cases include agribusiness ( palm oil);  mining, hydropower and xxx.  Speakers are indigenous leaders and one from the private sector.

 

Aims of the side-event

  • To present specific experiences of indigenous peoples on the impacts to their rights by business activities; and actions needed for the UNGP 2nd decade of implementation
  • To provide an avenue for exchange and interaction between Indigenous Peoples and relevant actors in advancing the respect and protection of Indigenous Peoples’ rights on the ground in relation to business.
