The Incident
In yet another mining community in Nueva Vizcaya, at least 10 individuals, including a 2-month old baby and his mother, were killed in landslides. On November 12, 2020, at least 3 sitios in Runruno, Quezon in Nueva Vizcaya have simultaneously experienced landslides resulting in the tragic deaths of 10 individuals who belong to the IP group, Ifugao. 2 of them are female while 8 are males.
At least 4 houses were crushed and buried under the mudslides.
The landslides happened particularly in Sitio Compound, Sitio Kinalabasa and Sitio Bit-ang. These areas are within the FCF mining tenement, a British-owned large scale mining company operating by open-pit method in Runruno. It is not the first time that a landslide happened in the area. Last 2006, during Typhoon Ompong, another deadly mudslide occurred.
The identified fatalities are: Julie Ann Tanesa, 16 Ben Junior Bulayo Uyami, 31 Dexter Kurt Nah-oy, 2 mos Cresencia Nah-oy 27 Francisco Taguiling Napadawan, 52 Jomar Ohdon Comilang, 33 Noel Tayaban Buyaco, 39 Mark Conie Mangandat Binwag, 25 Joel Buyuccan, 26 Omar Tuguinay Bolla, 17
There are many others injured. The families and their neighbors have evacuated to safer grounds. Others stayed with relatives in nearby barangays.
The incident happened at the height of the deadliest tropical cyclone, Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) that hit Northern Luzon. The typhoon had unleashed powerful winds and torrential rains that killed dozens in Luzon and flooded Cagayan Valley’s massive land area.
Most of the areas are destroyed by the open-pit mining operations of FCF. They are declared by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau as hazard-prone areas and should not be inhabited.
What type of help do they need?
The affected and bereaved families, now homeless, need help to build their shelters and gather themselves again and start anew. While they need comfort, food, medicines, and clothing, this call for support focuses on providing funds as a start-up to build their shelters to be their new homes.
