Position: Global Advocacy Coordinator

Duration: One year with Three (3) Months probationary period; Subject to renewal based on performance

Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is an organization established to lead a global concerted effort to address the global challenge of Indigenous Peoples confronted with criminalization, impunity and violence for defending their rights, especially to their lands, territories and resources. While it aims to advocate for Indigenous Peoples rights worldwide, it currently focuses its work on six (6) pilot countries – Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Democratic Republic of Congo, India and the Philippines. Its work includes documentation and monitoring of Indigenous Peoples situation especially on issues of criminalization of and impunity against them, and advocacy at the local and international levels. Part of its advocacy is the legal defense and sanctuary fund to assist Indigenous Peoples and their communities have better access to justice and safety in case of security risk.

IPRI is looking for a Global Advocacy Officer who will lead in achieving the organization’s advocacy goals within the strategic plan and shall:

  1. Develop and implement advocacy strategies, activities and materials in coordination with global, regional and national staff;
  2. Identify key advocacy targets for priority cases or relevant themes. This work includes but not limited to the following:
    • Submission of communication letters to relevant UN human rights bodies, procedures and mechanisms
    • Initiate and coordinate Petition signing as appropriate
    • Coordinate meetings and or dialogues with relevant officials
    • Conduct briefing sessions with relevant government and other actors at national, regional, global levels
    • Prepare policy briefs and other advocacy materials for specific advocacy targets, in close coordination with Research and Communications Coordinators
    • Organize and coordinate public events, webinars and other forms of advocacy activities for IPRI
  3. Provide support and assistance to regional and country staff/coordinators of IPRI in relation to advocacy work as needed or appropriate
  4. Coordinate with Communications Coordinator and Research Coordinator in the production of advocacy materials particularly in relation to research outputs and data-analysis of
  5. collected data in the data portal and on selected cases to be IPRI targets for sustained advocacy
  6. Prepare advocacy materials for relevant events like UN processes and other international or regional events, in coordination with global programs staff, as appropriate
  7. Broaden and strengthen networks of IPRI with different institutions, organizations, donors, media, government, civil society and relevant actors in advancing the advocacy work of IPRI
  8. Perform other tasks that may be assigned relevant to the tasks, skills and capability.

Qualifications and Preferences

  1. Language. The applicant shall be fluent in English and in Spanish or French.
  2. Highly skilled in English writing
  3. The applicant has at least 3 years of working with indigenous organizations and or institutions at national, regional and global levels and preferably an indigenous
    person
  4. Familiar with indigenous peoples’ rights and issues
  5. At least 3 years of experience in advocacy work
