The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming January 24 as International Day of Education, in recognition of the role of education for peace and development. The right to education is a universal human right. Yet, many Indigenous Peoples have been deprived of access to quality, inclusive, and culturally respectful education.
In the Philippines, Indigenous Peoples worked together to put up Lumad schools for Indigenous youth and children. However, these schools were closed down by the government, and Indigenous Peoples are attacked and criminalized for defending their schools and asserting their right to education.
