MEXICO || IPRI Requests The Mexican State To Carry Out Effective Actions To Stop Aggressions By An Armed Group Against An Autonomous Community In Chiapas

The Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI), an international organisation that defends the rights of Indigenous Peoples, makes a respectful call on your government to carry out effective actions for the protection of the life, integrity and the right of free determination of the inhabitants of the autonomous community 16 de Febrero, autonomous municipality Lucio Cabañas, official municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas.

Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Constitutional President of Mexico.

The Human Rights Centre Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas (Frayba), an organisation that is affiliated with IPRI, received urgent information from Junta de Buen Gobierno (JBG) “Nuevo Amanecer en Resistencia y Rebeldía por la Vida y la Humanidad” (New Dawn in Resistance and Rebellion for Life and Humanity), Caracol Patria Nueva, in Chiapas, which warned and informed that on the 10th of January 2022, approximately at 1:00 am, the aforementioned autonomous community was attacked.

According to that information, a group of around 15 hooded and armed individuals displaced a family of Base de Apoyo del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (Base of Support of the Zapatista Armed Forces of National Liberation) and beat up a 15-year-old boy. Ms Hilaria Hernández Gómez of 42 years of age was also beaten and forcibly abducted from her home while carrying her 3-year-old son Tomás López Hernández. For many hours, Ms Hilaria Hernández Gómez was listed as missing, as were her children Tomás, Jeremías López Hernández of 10 years of age and Julio Cesar López Hernández of 6 years.

At the moment the risk against the community population is maintained as the armed group remains in their territory. Therefore, and in accordance with the international obligations of the Mexican State on the matter, we make an urgent call to the authorities responsible to carry out effective actions to cease the aggressions of the armed group and guarantee the rights for life, integrity and the right of free determination of the inhabitants of 16 de Febrero community.

Yours faithfully,
