Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is seeking a Research Coordinator to join its growing team.

 

 

About the organization

Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is a legally registered, non-profit global Indigenous Peoples organization that works to protect Indigenous Peoples rights and unite and amplify the call for justice to victims of criminalization and impunity.

 

It was born out of growing criminalization and attacks against Indigenous Peoples. It was established to lead and coordinate The Global Initiative to Address and Prevent Criminalization, Violence, and Impunity against Indigenous Peoples, a concerted effort to address the global challenge of Indigenous Peoples confronted with criminalization, impunity, and violence for defending their lands and territories. 

 

This initiative is a global effort led by Indigenous Peoples, activists, advocates, and

organizations to strengthen coordination, solidarity, and actions on this critical issue

at all levels with the goal to improve the situation of Indigenous Peoples. The aim of

this Initiative is to prevent, respond, reduce, and prevent acts of criminalization of,

and violence against indigenous peoples. It also aims to provide better protection and access to justice for actual and potential victims not only as individuals but also as communities. 

 

 

About the position

The Research Coordinator (RC) has the responsibility to ensure that the research programme of IPRI is implemented well and on a timely basis, including the regular gathering of data for the database and data analysis. The RC shall work closely with the Communications and Advocacy Coordinators in relation to developing advocacy and communication materials based on research outputs. The RC shall work closely with the ICT Specialist in relation to the updating of the data portal and using the data for developing advocacy strategies and materials. The Research Coordinator shall also supervise the Documentation and Database Officer, consultants and/or part time staff, interns and volunteers for research and date monitoring, including the database. The work of the Research Coordinator is a full-time position, requiring 40-hour work week. The position can be work from home. Indigenous applicants are preferable.

 

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer/Executive Director

 

Responsibilities 

  1. Efficient implementation of the Research agenda/programme of IPRI
  • Develop the detailed plan including timelines of the annual research plans
  • Coordinate the conduct of research activities, including designing research questionnaires/ and guidelines
  • Prepare the annual report on the state of criminalization of indigenous peoples  using the database and in coordination with programme staff, partners and allied organisations
  • Prepare the Terms of Reference for research-related consultancy and ensure proper supervision and guidance
  • Conduct regular data-analysis
  • Coordinate with regional and country staff on research work of IPRI and supervise research work at all levels.
  • Supervise part time staff, volunteers and interns of the Research Programme
  • Prepare the annual report on the state of criminalization of indigenous peoples in close coordination with the COO and other programme staff
  • Coordinate the preparation of special and or thematic reports of IPRI in close coordination with the ED and COO as appropriate
  1. Lead and coordinate the documentation and monitoring of cases of criminalization of and violence against Indigenous Peoples worldwide.
  • Supervise the Documentation and Database Officer (DDO)
  • Work closely with the ICT specialist, DDO and national partners in relation to updating of the data portal and using the data for developing advocacy strategies and materials.

 

Essential skills and experience

The candidate should be culture-sensitive, has high level of integrity, accountability, and punctuality and be willing to work beyond normal working hours. He/she should be a good team player.

  • Obtained At least a bachelor’s degree in any social science.
  • Highly skilled in research with at least 3 years of research experience related to Indigenous Peoples and/or human rights.
  • At least 2 years’ work experience on evidenced-based advocacy.
  • Highly knowledgeable on Indigenous Peoples’ rights and issues.
  • Skilled in report writing, communication and networking.
  • Highly committed in advancing the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Proficiency in a second language (Spanish or French) is an advantage.
